About Merrick

Merrick’s best streets run south of Merrick Road, where the canal grid opens into Merrick Bay and most back yards end at a bulkhead. Inland, Merrick Gables holds the older and more architecturally settled blocks. The hamlet’s landmark is an unlikely one: Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve, a capped landfill turned 52-acre park whose 155-foot summit takes in Jones Beach, the bay, and the Manhattan skyline in a single sightline — a skyline the Babylon Branch reaches in about forty minutes, the shortest ride of the South Shore hamlets. Merrick is governed entirely from Hempstead Town Hall and split between two elementary districts that meet again in high school.
